There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just over the dividing line from nearby Thailand, in which gambling hall gambling is not permitted. Eight gambling dens are based in a relatively small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime area, a three to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing capital accrued from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; however, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and although visas are apparently required to pass, there are methods around this, as is real of many border crossings.
The first Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored barge gambling hall, contains 150 slot machines and 60 gaming tables. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slot machines and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and 66 of the common table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive vacation and hotel complex that contains many amenities aside from the gambling hall, which offers 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and eighty eight tables.
